What Was the Lipstick Audrey Hepburn Wore in Breakfast at Tiffany's?
The first time I ever watched Breakfast at Tiffany’s was almost 10 years ago and on every make-up shopping trip since I’ve have wanted to find the lipstick Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
A subtle shade of pink with coral tones, completely unique and unlike the thousands of lipsticks I’ve swatched and stalked on my search for “the one”.
If you’ve watched this iconic movie set in 1960s New York then you probably remember the scene with the lipstick well. Holly (Audrey Hepburn) is sat in the back of a taxi with Paul aka ‘Fred’ (George Peppard). In between Paul asking her to marry him and his infamous speech about her fear of “not wanting to be put in a cage” (blah, blah!) there was the even more important on-screen snippet where she applies the most dreamy shade of lip colour in an utterly delightful texture. The shade is the most perfect “my natural lip colour but better” tone - ideal for everyday wear!

Creamy but not shimmery. An intriguing mixture of coral, nude and pink shades all blended into one glamorous lipstick bullet. The most interesting part about this shade is how so many other shades of lipstick can look very similar inside their packaging in some lights but they always turn out to be too pink, too orange or too nude. After extensive research and reading many theories including one that claimed that the lipstick was made personally for Audrey, who played Holly Golightly in the film, I discovered that the brand of lipstick worn is actually a high-street brand!
The Exact Lipstick Audrey Hepburn Wore in Breakfast at Tiffany's
The mysterious lipstick shade is Revlon Pink in the Afternoon and is still available to buy today! The black bullet casing is simple yet elegant which explains why it was the perfect choice for the classic Hollywood movie. However, this isn't a cruelty-free lipstick and therefore we decided to create our very own Breakfast at Tiffany's lipstick available exclusively to Minnirella. Using our research, as well as our feedback from all of you, we've created the ultimate Holly Golightly lipstick which we know you absolutely adore!
The Revlon brand featured a lot throughout the movies of the 50s and 60s, especially those starring Audrey Hepburn. In Breakfast at Tiffany’s she wore Revlon’s Pink in the Afternoon - a perfect combination of pink and nude. In Funny Face and generally for her 50s make-up look she wore Revlon’s Fire and Ice - a revolutionary shade of red that warms to the shade of your skin tone.
Lisa Eldridge's Audrey Hepburn Lipstick "Go Lightly"
In June 2019, Lisa Eldridge revealed that she had in fact won Audrey Hepburn's lipstick holder and used lipstick at an auction. She wouldn't reveal the exact brand of the lipstick, but it has been discontinued and no longer exists anyway. Lisa then went on to release her own collection of pink lipstick, one of which was a salmon-pink lipstick entitled "Go Lightly". Having experimented with Audrey Hepburn's real lipstick, I believe that this shade was based on Audrey's lipstick that she won at the auction. In pictures, Lisa Eldridge's Go Lightly lipstick does share a strong resemblance to Audrey Heburn's original Breakfast At Tiffany's lipstick. However, having tried both, I would still say that the Revlon Pink in the Afternoon looks far more authentic. In real life, Lisa Eldridge's still don't appear as similar to the one Audrey wears in Breakfast at Tiffany's in the way that Pink in the Afternoon does. There has been speculation recently that this wasn't the exact product Audrey Hepburn wore, BUT in terms of colour and texture, it certainly IS!
Cruelty-Free Alternatives to the Breakfast at Tiffany’s Lipstick Colour
But what if you’re looking for a cruelty-free alternative? Well that’s what Minnirella is here for of course! Never before has it taken me so much research and time to track down an alternative (cruelty-free or not) to any particular beauty product. Through extensive trial and error, not to mention uncountable incompatible swatches trailing up my arm, we've created our very own cruelty-free version of the lipstick Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany's.
