The Plastic Pollution Crisis
There’s no denying that plastic, whether in the form of product packaging or otherwise, is everywhere! But it’s not until you consciously make an effort to minimise your single-waste plastic consumption or go zero-waste completely that you realise how much we use across an average day, week, month, or year. Yes, recycling helps but it isn’t enough to combat the huge problem that is plastic pollution. What we really need to be doing at the very least, is switching to products with biodegradable product packaging and making as many ethical swaps as possible, before then recycling the remainder of the plastic we use. Unfortunately, not all plastic is recycled. Unlike other materials, plastic if not recycled, doesn’t break down and therefore sits in landfills, in our oceans and elsewhere forever. Cutting down on the amount of single-waste plastic that enters our homes and offices is one of the first, most important steps we should all be taking right now.
Reducing Plastic Waste While Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene
It can be easy to overlook the items we use on a daily basis, but these are often the items that are responsible for increasing our domestic carbon footprint. Seeing that I have teamed up with Brushd. to focus on eco-friendly dental care, let’s turn our attention to plastic waste produced from the dental products we use. Adequate oral hygiene requires the use of tooth floss, a tooth brush, toothpaste and mouthwash at minimum. While this is a great way of maintaining good oral health, the waste accumulated from all of these single-use products is dreadful for our planet. Dental floss comes in a plastic box and the floss itself is often coated in plastic. Toothpaste comes in a plastic tube. Toothbrushes are most often made from plastic and come in plastic and cardboard packaging which is difficult to recycle. And mouthwash comes in a plastic bottle. Talking about toothbrushes alone, let’s say that each of us gets through 4 toothbrushes each year. That’s 320 per person in a lifetime. Currently, there are approximately 67 million people living in the UK, which means based on these facts, 268 million toothbrushes are sent to landfills each year in the UK alone! If all of us were to make the effortless switch over to eco-friendly alternatives, imagine the difference we could make!?
